Evidence of Active Quaternary Deformation on the Great Valley Fault System near Winters, Northern California

چکیده

Abstract The Great Valley fault system defines the tectonic boundary between Coast Ranges and Central in California, is active throughout Quaternary, has been source of several significant (M > 6) historic earthquakes, including 1983 M 6.5 Coalinga earthquake 1892 Vacaville–Winters sequence. However, locations geometries individual faults are poorly constrained, slip rates paleoearthquake chronology largely unknown. Here, we report geomorphic subsurface geophysical evidence surface-deforming displacement on a strand west Winters, California. Detailed mapping high-resolution seismic reflection tomography survey along an ∼800 m profile across Bigelow Hills document fault, which call West Winters system, with apparent east side-up surficial geologic units. These data together suggest that latest Quaternary. Together local reports from time, this raises possibility may have ruptured deformed surface during 6 Future earthquakes vertical structures could hazard implications, given region’s low relief presence major water conveyance infrastructure.

Quaternary volcanism in Tabas and the role of the Nayband great fault

Introduction: Quaternary basalts are one of the last signs of magmatism in Iran, some of which are related to deep fractures and active faults in the Quaternary. Quaternary basalts of Tabas are very important due to their high expansion and location in eastern Iran, and are located 140 km south east of Tabas city and according to the proposed divisions are part of the Lut zone. The aim of this...

Crustal Deformation in Great California Earthquake Cycles

Periodic crustal deformation associated with repeated strike-slip earthquakes is computed for the following model; A depth L (< H) extending downward from the Earth's surface at a transform boundary between uniform elastic lithospheric plates of thickness H is locked between earthquakes. It slips an amount consistent with remote plate velocity Vp• after each lapse of earthquake cycle time Tcy. ...

Slip-Parallel Seismic Lineations on the Northern Hayward Fault, California

A high-resolution relative earthquake location procedure is used to image the fine-scale seismicity structure of the northern Hayward fault, California. The seismicity defines a narrow, near-vertical fault zone containing horizontal alignments of hypocenters extending along the fault zone. The lineations persist over the 15-year observation interval, implying the localization of conditions on t...
